Bulk-Adding Activities

We're delighted to launch the first new feature of 2011, and that is the bulk-adding of Exercises and Events can now be done from the [Add Exercise] or [Add Event] pages. Where you add in the activity dates, just press [+Add Another] to get another row.

Why is this great? We may be a little late for your 2011 training calendars, but it makes it really easy to quickly add multiple activities with the same details on different dates. We'll match the same attendance, roles, map location, description, tags, resources, and pre-plan across all of them automatically, and then you can go back in and edit each individually.

Please note, there is no bulk-delete, so use carefully! Make sure to edit your dates so the end-date is always after the start date. Enjoy!

Waterborne EMS D4H Integration

The Rescue-B is the most innovative, unique and high-performance EMS rescue boat in the world.

We are working to implement Decisions For Heroes as their live system on the Rescue-B to allow EMS crews to effectively work, collaborate, and communicate in every situation with other teams and with their control centre through a dedicated rugged tablet. The system will assist crews in their routine checks of materials and scheduled maintenance.

Designed from the bottom up by and with EMS professionals, the Rescue-B is a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) with water jet propulsion, fully enclosed cabin/wheelhouse, an innovative water level rescue and recovery platform system, airlift-evacuation friendly and very high performance. It is uniquely designed and equipped to carry out emergency medical rescue missions on water.

Amazing People: Western Wayne County Hazardous Materials Response Team

Michael J. Magda is a Firefighter/EMT-P/Hazardous Materials Specialist with Western Wayne County Hazardous Materials Response Team who are users of Decisions For Heroes (D4H). Formed in 1987, their team currently has 45 members that come from Mutual Aid Associations fire department that are located within the Detroit metropolitan area. The team is also responsible for incidents at the nation’s 11th busiest airport, Detroit-Wayne County Airport (DTW) which handles 40 million passengers and 360 million pounds of cargo each year.

We spoke to Michael about D4H, and how it helps their team...

"Decisions For Heroes (D4H) software is the most valuable tool my Hazmat team utilizes. As soon as you log-in, the Dashboard gives you a snapshot of the organization’s status, from members on and off call, to upcoming training events, to past events.

The program answers every imaginable question you might have about your department, from “Where’s a particular piece of equipment located?” to “What’s its maintenance status and history?” and “Who’s qualified to wear an SCBA mask?” The program can answer these and many other questions with a few clicks of a mouse."

Michael continued to explain to use that while Initial setup is time intensive, it was not difficult. The data entry required for accurate data output takes many hours but is well worth the organization's time and energy. Once complete, you’re able to track qualifications, hours spent in training, on incidents and attendance for personnel, as well as quantity, expiration dates, hours of operation, number of uses for equipment and much more.

"Before my team acquired D4H, we experienced many Information Management issues. One problem was finding somebody, from among twenty-three member Fire Departments, to perform a task and be able to track its progress. Now, I can assign a task to a particular member or post it at the Whiteboard for someone looking for a project."

Another problem Michael had was communication. Members who missed an incident would call him for days, taking up precious time asking, "What happened out there? What did you do about the situation?" "Now, with D4H, those members can review the incident, read my IAP or narrative and see the equipment used at any given incident."

"The monthly or year-end reports are unbelievable. You’re able to print out graphs and charts for many different stats within the four categories: Incidents, Casualties, Exercises, and Events. Within those categories you’re able to see or print stats for durations, travel (miles and or time), weather and much more.

The most valuable part of this software is its ability to centralize information in one location to manage your organization. Regardless of whether you’re a Hazardous Materials Team, EMS provider, Urban Search and Rescue Team, or a Fire Department, It’s in there for you."

In 2005, the Western Wayne County HMRT became one of eighteen Regional Response Teams for the State of Michigan. Since becoming an RRT, they have had to increase their resources so that they were able to respond to larger incidents, including those related to weapons of mass destruction. By becoming an RRT they have also increased our response area to the entire state of Michigan.

"This was the best money we’ve ever spent. The program does it all. If you don’t believe me or you have questions, please contact me so you can experience it for yourself."

Thanks Michael - you've made our Amazing People page :-)

Special Feature: ALSAR's New Logo Concept

Donnchadh interviews John Howard from the UK Association of Lowland Search and Rescue (ALSAR) about their new logo. John was the concept designer, and explains in the interview how he made the logo match the current family of rescue logos in the UK for Mountain and Cave rescue.

ALSAR is a voluntary organisation dedicated to assisting the emergency services in the search for missing persons. There are presently 15 established and a number of probationary units within ALSAR with approximately 500 trained Search Technicians. D4H Community Support

Today we rebrand our 'Improve-It' section as 'D4H Community Support'. You may have noticed that we couldn't keep up with the amount of feature requests coming in - we reached 1,850 Improv-It posts (excluding direct emails!) and about 509 individual improvements you guys identified!

We have now imported all the public (old: shared with all teams) Improve-It's over to Suggest and Vote Ideas. We will attempt to mark each 'Planned', 'Done', 'Not Planned' as we catch up with ourselves.

There is also an Ask a Question area where you can publicly ask how to achieve something or how other teams use D4H to achieve something. The entire D4H community can reply and when you receive an answer you're happy with, mark it as 'Answered'.

We will be building out a Knowledge Base of articles as we write them. You're welcome to add to them too - we'll moderate this area a little and highlight the best help articles.

Within your D4H account you'll see a [Support] tab on the right hand side. Clicking this will ask you how we can help, and will search our knowledge base for an immediate answer before helping you submit a support request.

D4H Community Support is visible to the public, but only people with D4H accounts can engage and post content. Your sign-in is your standard D4H username and password. You can visit the Community Support by visiting:
